Special education

Lonneke van Leth Dans invests in all types of education so that all students can discover and experience dance. In recent years, we have gained extensive experience in special education. We now collaborate with many special primary and secondary special education schools, where students follow a comprehensive dance curriculum that we created specifically for them. The success of our programme is due to the enthusiasm of our dance teachers and our close collaboration with the schools and teachers.
School performances
We often perform shows for special needs schools to smaller groups, several times a day. We ensure there are fewer distractions and provide slightly more detailed explanations. This allows the students to take part at their own pace. This creates wonderful moments of connection and wonder.
Learning pathways
Together with schools and partners, we develop continuous learning pathways that span several school years. In special needs education, longer programmes work well. This allows our dance teachers to build a strong bond with the students. Customization, recognition, and connection are of great importance. There are many possibilities. Below, we provide a few examples. Is your class or school interested in a performance, a workshop or a learning pathway? We’d be happy to help you decide what best suits your students.

The Hague Shuffle special
We adapted De Haagse Shuffle for special education. This programme focuses on the joy of dance and gaining a better understanding of oneself. Students discover the basics of dance and develop their sense of music. They also experience how to use space. This learning pathway lasts three years, with twelve lessons in each year.

Special primary education
We developed various lesson series for the P.H. Schreuderschool in The Hague. During project weeks, for example, we work on dance styles from different countries, interpreting paintings around a single theme in dance, or bring a book to life through dance. These learning pathways often consist of six lessons.

Special secondary education
For the Pleysier College in The Hague, we developed a three-year curriculum for the second and third years. Dance and visual arts complement each other in learning pathway. For example, the students learn various dance styles and create stop-motion animations of dancing figures. The results are remarkable and have generated even more enthusiasm among our teachers.
Workshops
In special education, we primarily use dance workshops to help students develop their physical movement, process sensory input and express their emotions more effectively. We also work on the goals of citizenship education. We are very flexible during the lessons. We monitor each moment, each group and even each individual student to determine which explanations and teaching methods are most suitable. This ensures that every student has a positive experience.
